On 5 September 2010, the mayor of Pollica Angelo Vassallo was killed with 9 gunshots. Even today the family is waiting for the crime to come to light. Angelo was called the fisherman mayor for his previous job, which had taught him respect for the sea and for its territory for which he fought until the last day of his life and for which, probably, he was killed. A convinced environmentalist, in 15 years in office he will radically change the mentality of a country. Against building speculation, against drugs and Camorra infiltrations, he awakened pride in the citizens for a land that, if well managed, could be an infinite wealth. He denounced the paralysis of the works along the provincial road 108, subjected the areas most at risk of infiltration to landscape constraints, issued the ordinance for which the assets of historical-cultural interest were sold to the municipality to prevent the Camorra and speculators from gaining money, built a sewer system that connected all the hamlets of its municipality, more than 20 km of pipelines, to eliminate discharges into the sea (common practice in these territories) and conquer the 5 sails of legambiente. He proved to be an enlightened mayor for the period and the place where he lived, he imagined a sustainable development of his territory, focusing on everything unique the Cilento Park possessed. Thanks to him, today Pollica is considered the pearl of Cilento and the Mediterranean Diet has been declared an intangible heritage of humanity by Unesco.

Massimo Vassallo, Angelo's brother, tells us how, since the day of the murder, he and his other brother Dario have never stopped looking for the truth. They created the Angelo Vassallo Foundation whose main objectives are to safeguard the territory for which Angelo gave his life and to keep the memory alive so that whoever killed him is discovered.

Raffaele known as Garibaldi at the time Vassallo worked in the electrical service. He remembers Angelo with great affection, he often went to visit him in common and they always exchanged funny jokes despite not being close politically. One day Raffaele, a country man, asked Angelo to "teach him" about the sea and he replied: Raffè, when there is wind spread the sail, straight tiller and full speed ahead! "
